Abstract

The development of exegesis  (tafsir)  in our region began to develop since the 1960’s. It commenced with translations and commentaries that were limited to certain selected  juz or  surah, then continued to develop until reaching perfection and completeness.  Although at the beginning he was opposed by other religious scholars, eventually the government agreed to permit his work. The work of Mahmud Yunus consequently became the first step for all Indonesian scriptual commentators to further develop the art of exegisis in the region. This paper briefly explains the Tafsir Qur'an Karim by Mahmud Yunus.  Its language entails the theme of the authentification of the Qur’an verses and is an explanation and guide to its vision and orientation for all readers.  As well as describing the characteristics of translation and exegesis, the paper examines the intellectual and social character of this work in the history of the development of religious commentaries in the archipelago.

Abstract

Basically models of exegesis can be grouped into two variets, that which is exoteric or esoteric. The first model gets extraordinary support from Qur’an researchers.  This is evident in the number of their commentaries that until now are countless. This phenomena leaves behind the second model of exegesis, although there are several religious scholars who have examined it so that they have produced books but it can be said these works are extremely rare.  Nevertheless, both exoteric and esoteric exegesis have the same urgency of importance.  According to a number of religious scholars, such as al-Ghazali, exoteric commentary, lacking esoteric content, in several matters is not capable of fully and comprehensively under-standing the purpose of the Qur’an. For this reason, this papers seeks to analyze esoteric exegesis commencing to its conceptual constructs, legal basis and conditions to its several models of commentary.

Abstract

Knowledge of  qirā’at  until now has only been regarded as under-standing the various methodologies used in reciting the Quran. There has been very little research into analyzing the implications of recitative differences in terms of their purpose, although the many versions of qira’at rightly give rise to differing exegesis. This paper seeks to examine the implication of Qur’anic recitation in those religious verses that concern gender relations. There are many religious verses that address gender differences but this paper only examines verses connected with the opposite sexes shaking hands and permission for women to work outside the home.  This second verse is mentioned because until now there has often been the viewpoint that women ought not work outside the home as long as men and women shake hands at the beginning and end of business matters. For that reason, this paper is very suitable for analysis as a reminder that very rarely is there a person who interprets the Qur’an from an angle of familiarity with various qira’at.

Abstract

There are three opinions in religious discourses regarding the law of rasm  ‘u£mānī  in Qur’an writings. The first opinion states that  rasm ‘u£mānī is tauqīfī (taken for granted from Prophet Muhammad saw), the second states that it is ijtihādī, and the last is the most moderate opinion intended to give flexibility to the average person to adapt with the Qur’an.  On the other side, it also emphasizes that certain people (khawā¡) ought to maintain the preservation of  rasm  ‘u£mānī.  The paper’s author asks since when did the doctrine that states  rasm ‘u£mānī  is  tauqīfī  exist? Has this doctrine been known since the beginning of the era of Islam?

Abstract

The stories in Qur'an are Allah’s decrees which convey more beau-tiful values beyond any religious text ever written. It is the holiest scripture and is written  in a wonderful, understandable, and attract-ive language humbly conveying a vast amount of information about life and events that happened in the past. It’s aim is to be an object of reflection for human beings living in this age and the future. Even more so, the stories in Al-Qur'an also entail an educative function providing learning materials,  and teaching methods, regarding the transformative power of Islam and the internalization of true religious values.

Abstract

Muslim merchants were active as traders from the seventh century. Several archipelago Hindu and Buddhist kingdoms established com-mercial and diplomatic connections with Middle Eastern Islamic rulers. Archaeological evidence pointing to this fact has been found at a shipwreck site in the Java Sea near Cirebon. Among the discovered trade goods were indications of Islam in the form of a stamp-mould with the inscription asma’ul husna. Although most of the Indonesian community follow Sunni teaching, in practice at this time in Sumatra and Java there are devotees of Syi’ah. Archaeological evidence points that Islam entered Southeast Asian archipelago from Persia via  Gujarat, India. The religion was brought by merchants to Southeast Asia, especially to Indonesia and the Malay peninsula.

Abstract

This paper examines the influence of Persia in the history of Malay culture and literature. Persian influence appears in prayers, religious ceremonies and the tendency towards Sufi ideas. It is also found in Malay vocabulary, types of writing, traditional literary romances known as hikayat, poetry and historical texts. Further influence appears in Malay cultural values, canon law and religious treatises which are commonly also regarded as literary works. This influence is not coincidental but the result of historical factors which cannot be ignored. Persian religious scholars, intellectuals and cogniscenti played an important role in the spread of Islam and its intellectual traditions. This influence can be seen in works such as Taj al-Salitan, Hikayat Amir Hamzah, Hikayat Muhammad Ali Hanafiyan  and Hikayat Burung Pingai.

Abstract

This paper examines cultural heritage objects and their use for the development of the nation. Its subject is the National Ordinance (Undang-Undang) No.5 1992 concerning Cultural Heritage Objects.  Differing forms of regulations contained in this law can also be found in other countries’ statutes. Cultural heritage objects are not pre-served merely as a formality, but also have a social function and can be used for national development.  Cultural heritage objects must be unconditionally preserved, through both legal statutes and grant funding for their conservation,  in order that they are guarded from natural and human destruction.
